Winter Sports End for Local Teams

Also, the Lancer hockey team reached the finals of Wickenheiser Cup while the basketball team captured a district championship.

It was a good week for the sports teams at Lutheran South this week.

And for the rest of the area schools, it was the end of the winter season.

The Lancer hockey team will be skating for the Wickenheiser Cup championship in the Mid-States Hockey Association after a thrilling win in their semifinal series against Seckman.

Lutheran South won the opener of the best-of-two series, 3-2, but Seckman came back in the game two with a 5-1 victory. That forced a mini-game, which was won by Lutheran South.

The Lancers will face Whitfield for the Wickenheiser Cup title Mar. 7 at the Scottrade Center at 5:30 p.m.

Oakville's hockey team fell just short of joining Lutheran South at the Scottrade Center. The Tigers lost in their in two very close games. SLUH won the opener 5-3 and the second game 4-2. But the games were much closer than the scores would indicate. SLUH had an empty net goal with five seconds left in the first game and had two empty net goals in what was a 2-2 game in the second game.

Basketball

The Lutheran South boys' basketball team entered Class 4 District 3 play with an 11-14 record. But the third-seeded Lancers exited with wins over the top two seeds, a .500 record and a district championship.

Lutheran South defeated Affton 70-57, second-seeded Pacific 58-53 and top-seeded Festus 68-54. The Lancers outscored the Tigers 22-7 in the fourth quarter in the championship game Saturday at Lutheran South.

Lindbergh had an impressive showing in the Class 5, District 5 Tournament at Fox. The Flyers made it to the title game and led top-ranked Vianney after three quarters before falling 48-40. Lindbergh had reached the finals with wins over Fox (52-50) and Kirkwood (54-49).

in the opening round of the Class 5, District 5 Tournament. The Tigers prevailed 65-60 despite 32 points by Adis Mujakic of the Panthers. Austin Gillmann made 11 of his 14 field goal attempts en route to 23 points for the Tigers, who had an early lead before falling to Vianney 45-28 in the semifinals.

Northwest had its biggest scoring game of the year in its Class 5 District 1 first round game against Seckman at Jackson. The Lions scored 51 points in the first half in an 85-53 victory. Northwest made 10 of its 17 3-pointers in the game led by Christian Lamborn who was 5-for-6. Northwest could have used some of those first round points in its semifinal game against Cape Central. The Lions fell 64-40.

Rockwood Summit had two nail-biters in the Class 5, District 3 Tournament at Parkway South. The Falcons defeated Parkway West 50-48 and lost to Lafayette 50-49 despite 19 points by Jory Woodson.

Cor Jesu advanced to the championship game of the Class 5 District 5 Girls Tournament at Fox.

The Fox sisters combined for 37 points as in the first round at Fox. Mandy Fox had 21 and Emily Fox added 16. Mandy had 14 in the semifinals against Kirkwood but they were not near enough as the .

What a difference three days made for the Oakville and Lindbergh girls basketball teams. Lindbergh defeated the Tigers 44-25 in the regular season finale Feb. 17. Oakville had just six points in the first half and none in the second quarter in that game.

But it was a complete turnaround when the teams faced each other in the first round of districts. Oakville led 22-5 after the first quarter and . Alyssa Norberg led the way with 14 points.

Seckman won its first game in the Class 5, District 1 Tournament at Jackson before falling to the host team. Seckman defeated Northwest 59-51 but lost to Jackson, which went on to win the title, 62-36.

Rockwood Summit had a tough end to its season in the first round of the Class 5, District 3 Tournament. The Falcons were outscored 40-10 in the first and third quarters, losing 62-30.

The Lutheran South girls reached the championship game of the Class 4, District 3 Tournament. The Lancers beat Windsor (51-29) and Affton (57-46) before losing to Pacific in the 56-34 in the title game.

Affton won its first game over Festus 52-50.

Patch Male Athlete of the Week: Lutheran South's Jim Hudson had an outstanding district tournament capped by a triple-double against Festus. He had 19 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. Hudson was 11-of-13 from the free throw line and also had five steals.

Patch Female Athlete of the Week: Chelsey Poth had an outstanding tournament for the Chargers. She had 18 points against Oakville and 26 in the championship game. Poth was 15-of-20 from the field in the two games and made all seven of her free throw attempts against the Pioneers.
