Every time a new road is made to relieve congestion, congestion gets worse because more homes are built since there is now more road capacity. Until urban sprawl is addressed, the congestion relief will be limited.   more ›

Affton's Larry Stone: From Air Force Air Traffic Controller to Community Booster

Larry Stone was a vocal opponent to Value Village moving into Affton.

The Affton Community Involvement Association (ACIA) is losing a key member. Larry Stone sent notice to the membership that he is stepping down after five years as chairman and leaving the organization as a “regular” member. The AICA is comprised of members from the parishes of Affton churches St. Dominic Savio and Seven Holy Founders. The group tackles issues it feels are for the long-term betterment of the community of Affton, both from an economic and a social perspective, Stone said. He said after five terms, it was beginning to wear on him. He’s 68, and still works as a concierge at an area hospital to pay off his mortgage. “Would I just as soon be reading or planting some tomatoes? It’s not in the cards for me,” he said. “Frankly, if …

Memorial Day BBQ? 8 Money-Saving Tricks (Sponsored)

Who’s NOT planning a BBQ this weekend? If the weather holds and you’ve got propane or charcoal, chances are, you’re grilling something with your friends and family. Here, new ideas for keeping your costs down. Sponsored by Home Depot.

Here at Patch, we like to be thrifty, so we talked to two barbeque experts and uncovered some really good ideas to help you save money on your next outdoor party. 1. Start with a marinade. This means planning ahead -- say, Friday. Just marinate it or brine for one or two days and then cook long and slow on the barbeque grill to break down tissues but maintain moisture. “You need to include an acid in the marinade, perhaps juice, vinegar or soy sauce, but avoid cola which is so acidic it can turn meat into a soggy mess.” Try …

Clubhouse Bar and Grill, Former Ten Mile House, Set to Open June 1

The new owners want everyone from kids on up to feel at home.

On June 1, what had been the Ten Mile House since 1872, will open as the Clubhouse Bar and Grill. Dan Roberts, one of the new owners, said they did their research and discovered that people really didn’t want to come into the Ten Mile House. All the other owners are members of the Bryan family: Tim and Patty and their three boys, Kevin, Doug and Wayne. Roberts said the restaurant has been renovated from floor to ceiling. “It’s going to be lit up,” Roberts said. “When you drive by, you’re going to want to stop. When you come in here, we’re going to make you feel at home.” He said the whole family will feel welcome. “We’ll have any game on you want to watch,” he said. “For the women, we’ll have four or five different salads. We’ll have …
