Woman's Third DWI Arrest Comes After Crashing Into Vehicle, Police Say

A driver who struck another car from behind at Gravois and Heege roads had a blood-alcohol level more than three three times the legal limit, according to a court document.

A woman faces a felony drunk driving charge after striking another car at the intersection of Gravois and Heege roads. Melanie Hanks, 35, of the 4000 block of Eichelberger Street in St. Louis, was charged Feb. 21 with driving while intoxicated as a persistent offender. It is her third DWI charge. Hanks also was found guilty of DWI twice in 2006. St. Louis County Police said Hanks was seen swerving between lanes before striking the rear of another vehicle at 6:50 p.m. June 30. Officers responding to the accident said she had a strong odor of alcohol, and watery and glassy eyes. Hanks did poorly on a sobriety test and a blood sample revealed her blood-alcohol level was at .293 percent at 9:42 p.m., more than three times the legal limit. She …

Man Assaults Mother, Takes Car, Crashes into Seven Holy Founders Building

The woman told police her son returned without the car and told her he ran into a building.

A 35-year-old man assaulted his mother, took her car keys, stole her car and later drove it into the former Seven Holy Founders School building in Affton Tuesday, police said. William Hoffee, 35, of the 4900 block of Fyler Avenue in South St. Louis, was charged Wednesday with second-degree robbery, leaving the scene of an accident and resisting arrest. St. Louis County Police said Hoffee assaulted his mother at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 9900 block of Pointe South Drive in the Concord area of South St Louis County. He then took her car keys and debit card and left in her vehicle, police said. Man Indicted for Manslaughter in Fatal Concord Crash

Prosecutors said that Elvedin Halkic was drunk when he caused a fatal accident that killed Concord's Edna Sue Binder in March.

A man was indicted by a St. Louis County grand jury Thursday for involuntary manslaughter in a fatal crash in Concord. St. Louis County Police said in a report that Elvedin Halkic, 32, of the 3700 block of Swiss Road in Mehlville, was driving under the influence of alcohol March 11 when he ran a red light at South Lindbergh Blvd. and East Concord Road. Halkic’s car struck a car driven by Edna Sue Binder, 58, of the 4500 block of Haverlegih Place in Concord. Binder later died from her injuries. A St. Louis County Police officer noticed a strong smell of alcohol on Halkic and noticed he seemed intoxicated. Halkic admitted drinking alcohol before the accident, according to the police report.

Man Killed in Affton Forklift Accident

A forklift toppled off a loading dock at Schroeder & Tremayne Inc. on Valcour Avenue.

A man working at an Affton business died Monday after being pinned under a fallen forklift that toppled off a loading dock. STLToday.com reported that the man was Robert Jett, 54, of Festus, who had worked for 18 years as a forklift operator at Schroeder & Tremayne Inc. at 8500 Valcour Avenue, a business that distributes household products. In January 2011 a similar accident claimed the life of an employee at the Kerry Ingredients and Flavours plant, just a few blocks away.
