Uniform change is part of an effort by local fire departments to raise breast cancer awareness.
The Shrewsbury Fire Department is fighting more than just fires in the month of October thanks to an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness. Fire Department personnel have replaced their usual uniform with T-shirts featuring the agency’s logo with a pink ribbon through it on the front and the words “Shrewsbury Fire Supports the Cure” in pink lettering on the back. The shirts will be in use until the end of October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “It’s a way of sharing our support for those (who have been impacted by breast cancer),” Fire Chief Bill Fox said, adding that it is a more personal mission as well. “A few of our firefighters have some cancer in their families.” The Shrewsbury crew is also selling similar T-shirts to…

The heat warning for the St. Louis area expires tonight, but dangerous temps are expected to return Sunday.
Fire departments and hospitals have dealt with a rash of heat-related distress during the recent heat warning. As rain began to move into the region Tuesday, temperatures remained oppressively in the high 90s, with a heat index topping at 110. Monday was even hotter. Across the region at least 30 people went to hospitals with heat-related illnesses, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. The high temperatures St. Louisians have endured lately could drop in the next couple days, but they won't for long. Forecasts from the National Weather Service website, along with others, have Wednesday and Thursday with highs in the mid-80s. Like today, there is a chance for rain both days. $30 million project will overhaul 90-year-old Kenrick-Glennon Seminary's interior infrastructure and add new wing.
The Archdiocese of St. Louis has begun work on an ambitious project to completely renovate the aging Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in Shrewsbury, updating it to modern building codes and improving its facilities. The project is scheduled to take about a year to complete and will cost $30 million. According to Office of Building and Real Estate Spokesman Randy Rathert, the funds were raised through a capital campaign after an extensive study of the building identified various areas of need that had long been put off.
