Name That Elephant: St. Louis Zoo Wants Your Input

The Zoo is asking patrons to help name its newest elephant this week.

Does she look like a Cai or a Priya? Maybe she is a Harper? The St. Louis Zoo can't decide what to name its baby elephant and it's asking patrons for help. Ellie, one of the Zoo's Asian elephants, gave birth to a bouncing 250-pound baby girl at 10:57 p.m. Friday, April 26, according to the Zoo. The Zoo has five names selected for the infant elephant and it is asking area residents to help choose which name is best suited for Ellie and Raja's new daughter. Patrons also chose Raja's name when he was born 20 years ago. The five options are: You can vote for your favorite name on the Zoo's web site, in person at any Zoo welcome desk or by mail. Mail a “Vote for the Baby Elephant Name” postcard with your name, address and your desired elephant …

Deck the House Contest: St. Louis Area Home Makes Final Round

This Affton house is the only St. Louis area finalist in Patch’s national Deck the House contest! Vote now to help them win $100,000 for schools.

Could this be the best “decked” house in the country?  Possibly. Congrats to Patrick and Denise Dolan for being chosen as one of the 24 finalists in our Deck the House contest! The Dolan’s Christmas decorations are so elaborate that Patrick Dolan finally bought a second electric service so they could run the washing machine and microwave at the same time as the nativity scene and the singing Santa. Patrick added 5,000 lights this year, drawing a total of more than 100 amps of power. Denise posts on Facebook constantly and has reached out to all her social networks, asking friends to vote for what Affton has come to call “the house with all the lights.” For more: We had tons of national entries in this year’s Deck the House contest and in …

Affton Family's Holiday Lights Draw Praise, Votes in Patch Contest

Patrick and Denise Dolan's Christmas decorations could earn the Affton School District $100,000. All they need is your vote!

The Dolan’s Christmas decorations are so elaborate that Patrick Dolan finally bought a second electric service so they could run the washing machine and microwave at the same time as the nativity scene and the singing Santa. “I used to always love helping my dad put up my Christmas decorations,” Patrick said. “When I got old enough to stand on the ladder, I just started putting lights up myself.” This year, the Dolan family is hoping to turn Patrick’s engineering prowess and holiday spirit into a $100,000 donation to the Affton School District through Patch’s Deck the House Contest. Vote here! Last year, the Dolan’s house won fifth place in the annual contest, which lets readers vote for their favorite home holiday light display. And fifth…

Rogers Middle School students—and art teacher Mandi Tripoli—entered the "Made by Milk" carton construction contest, competing against schools across the country for thousands of dollars in prize money. Vote for Rogers' "Bee Sustainable" Beehive here! When you see the picture of the beehive, click the "Vote for this entry!" button on the right. The school hopes to use the prize money to grow the garden and sustainability program at Rogers. Grand prize winners will win $5,000, and the top middle school each win $1,500. Share Your MoDOT Seat Belt Video on Patch, Earn a Scholarship

Patch is teaming up with the Missouri Department of Transportation's contest for the best student-produced commercial promoting seat belt use. Our category is the readers' choice. See how you can enter.

For the fourth year in a row, the Missouri Department of Transportation is sponsoring its "Battle of the Belt" contest, inviting students around Missouri to produce a 30-second commercial promoting seat belt use. This year, Patch joins the contest with an additional prize category: The readers' choice prize, good for a $250 scholarship contribution for the winning entry. That joins the Gold, Silver and Most Improved categories MoDOT already has. Why this contest? Because MoDOT says Missouri teen safety belt usage rate for 2011 was only 67 percent. Not good enough, officials say. Battle of the Belt is a safety belt competition between Missouri high schools to encourage the use of safety belts among students. If you're already producing your…
