FENTON -- An epic ending to an epic season. That's what the Cor Jesu Academy field hockey team was seeking Saturday afternoon, as it took to the turf at the A-B Soccer Park, for the Midwest Field Hockey Tournament championship game against archrival Nerinx Hall. And following a thrilling game, which left all nerves absolutely frayed, and all nails completely bitten, CJA was able to hold off its rivals, for a 3-2 victory, to claim its sixth Midwest championship, and first since 2006. "This is amazing. Just unbelievable," CJA head coach Liz Foz said, after getting a celebratory Gatorade bath from her players. "There was no way they were losing that game. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch recently recognized five Cor Jesu Academy athletes for their stellar performance on the soccer field. Senior Jenn Miller was the Athlete of the Year for girls soccer and led her team to the Class 3 state championship title in June. The midfielder was the go-to player for the Chargers, who won their last 15 games en route to a 23-2 season. She had 14 goals and six assists and will attend the University of Mississippi on a soccer scholarship. Defensive sweeper Emily Bollinger made the Post-Dispatch All-Metro first team and helped with the team’s 14 shutouts. The senior will attend the University of South Carolina in the fall. The Cor Jesu Academy has a bright future in its lacrosse team as the junior varsity squad earned high honors at the St. Joseph's Lacrosse Tournament, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. The 14-6 team played three games in one day and took away the awards for Offensive Player of the Year (Ashley Elnis), Defensive Player of the Year (Caroline Winschel) and MVP (Andrea Body). There was no question who deserved to be state champions. With a 3-0 win in the final game, the Cor Jesu Academy Chargers came into the state soccer tournament ranked No. 1 and left with two wins and a trophy. The team defeated Lee's Summit North in the final game to become Class 3 state champions on Saturday and earn school's second state title. Cor Jesu was in control the entire game, scoring three goals in the first half. Leading scorer Jenn Miller took charge and scored in the first 10 minutes of the match. Ever since the first day of spring practice back in February, the Cor Jesu Academy girls soccer team has ended every practice, game and team huddle with the same cheer. Head coach Missy Bruno would bring the team into a huddle and shout the words “Get to...” and the team would follow with a collective whisper of the word “state.” As the season went along, and the Chargers got closer to reaching their goal, Bruno told the team to get louder on their part of the cheer to signify how much closer they were to actually reaching the state championships.
