Boy Scout Project Benefits Gotsch Intermediate School in Affton

A 15-year-old member of Boy Scout Troop 352 out of Kirkwood completed a service project for Gotsch Intermediate School as part of his quest to become an Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America.

Eagle Scout Projects Brighten Affton Campuses

Affton High scouts performed landscaping and campus improvement at district schools.

Affton school grounds are a little greener this year thanks to the volunteer efforts of several Affton High School scouts earning their Eagle Scout ranks. Alexander Chapie, Brandon Dennis, Matthew Heckenkamp, Michael Conner McNeil and Robert Klemme were honored in January by the Affton School Board for their service to the district, which included landscaping at Gotsch Intermediate and Rogers Middle and laying of a walkway at Affton High. “It’s a program for training young men to be real men,” said Affton School Board President Michael McNeil, who is one of the troop leaders. “Scouting is a big deal for me. I’ve literally hiked hundreds of miles with some of these boys.” The younger McNeil performed his efforts in 2009 at Gotsch …

Affton Teen Raises the Roof for St. Louis Nonprofit

Eagle Scout project will construct an outdoor lean-to shelter for horses belonging to Ride On St. Louis.

In tough economic times, nonprofit organizations and charities become more dependent on the generosity of volunteers who donate their time, labor or funds. This summer, one St. Louis-based nonprofit will be able to check an item off its wish list thanks to the efforts of an Affton teen. Luke Panchot, 17, has raised $850 for materials to build a lean-to shelter for horses belonging to Ride On St. Louis. Established in 1998, the organization provides therapy through horseback riding for the developmentally and physically disabled, as well as disadvantaged youth. A member of Boy Scout Troop 586 and junior at St. John Vianney High School, Panchot is undertaking the project as part of his effort to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, scouting’s …

Affton Sophomore Earns Eagle Scout

Matt Heckenkamp is this week's Whiz Kid.

Name: Matt Heckenkamp School: Affton High School Grade: 10 Activities and Accomplishments: Last Thursday Heckenkamp was sworn in as an Eagle Scout by Boy Scout Troop 821 at a ceremony held at Affton High School. Only two percent of scouts reach this achievement, which requires the completion of 21 merit badge activities. For his Eagle service project, Heckenkamp led a crew that landscaped both sides of the driveway leading to Rogers Middle School from Mackenzie Road by designing beds and installing nearly 400 legacy stones. He joined the local Cub Scouts at age seven and later earned their highest award, the Arrow of Light. At Affton High Heckenkamp has been active in orchestra, basketball and volleyball. Jeffrey Pyne is accomplished in math and science, while also taking time to serve his church.

Name: Jeffrey John Pyne Grade: 12 School: Affton High School Accomplishments: Jeffery earned his Eagle Scout with gold and bronze palms for a project at Greenwood Cemetery, clearing an overgrown area of trees, shrub and brush and raising five markers. He participates in varsity swimming and wrestling and has played on the junior varsity baseball team. He won first place at the Suburban South Diving Championship and has received scholar athelete awards. Jeffery plays first chair in the trumpet section of the Affton High School Band. He's made first place at the TEAMS engineering competition. He has been on the honor list for four years. After finishing high school, he is planning on going on a two-year church mission before starting college…
