(Updated at 1:30 p.m. with news from Affton Fire Protection District) The rain that brought relief from the heat Sunday night also meant an uptick in calls for firefighters in the Affton and Mehlville fire protection districts. Have any pictures of storm damage in your neighborhood? Upload them to this story by clicking the "Upload Photos" button! The Affton Fire Protection District responded to several storm-related calls, including a tree that fell on a house, flooded basements and fire alarms likely set off by the storm. There were no injuries at any of these calls. The storm calls came after a full day fighting a fire on Provo Lane at Aliceton Lane. A shed, fence and some brush had caught fire, and firefighters were able to surpress it…
Only about 300 homes are still lacking power, down from nearly 5,000 last night.
Last night's brief summer storm broke the heat wave Affton has been suffering under, but it also brought a suffering of its own: power outages. Paul Hamtil, who lives near the intersection of Heege Road and Mackenzie Road, tweeted Affton-Shrewsbury Patch at @AfftonPatch to say there were "two broken power poles and a tree down over wires on Mathilda (Avenue.)" Workers said the power outage in that neighborhood could last until noon today, Hamtil said. Anyone else experiencing power outages? Any other effects from the …

For homeowners struggling with water sprinklers and irrigation systems as a way to keep their lawns green during the current heat wave, it may turn out to be a waste of time. Richardet says watering a lawn won't hurt anything, but it's not likely to green-up the grass, since the stressed-out blades likely have gone dormant as a way to cope with the stress of the extreme heat. "The grass may come back in places and not in other places," Richardet said, adding that other factors such as…
