Hockey The Lutheran South and Whitfield hockey teams put on a game for the ages in the Wickenheiser Cup championship contest Wednesday night at the Scottrade Center. The teams battled through a 5-5 tie in the 45 minutes of regulation and then through another 10 minutes of sudden death overtime. The championship would eventually be determined by a three-man shootout. Whitfield's Hunt Lucas was the only player on either side to score in the shootout and the Warriors had a 6-5 victory. "It was a heart-breaker," Lutheran South coach Dan Bertarelli said. "But somebody has to win and somebody has to lose. It was a great game. We fought back a couple of times but came up just short. Local high school teams wrap up their winter sports.
The Lutheran South hockey team is the last squad standing from the winter sports in the South County Patch area. The Lancers will play for a championship Wednesday night as they take on Whitfield for the Wickenheiser Cup of the Mid-States Hockey Association. The game will be at 5:30 at the Scottrade Center. Lutheran South has won both meetings against the Warriors during the regular season. The Lancers won 5-4 way back on Nov. 19 and cruised to a 10-2 win on Jan. 14. A pair of Lancers along with several other area players competed in the league's South Senior All-Star game Wednesday at Webster. Also, the Lancer hockey team reached the finals of Wickenheiser Cup while the basketball team captured a district championship.
It was a good week for the sports teams at Lutheran South this week. And for the rest of the area schools, it was the end of the winter season. The Lancer hockey team will be skating for the Wickenheiser Cup championship in the Mid-States Hockey Association after a thrilling win in their semifinal series against Seckman. Lutheran South won the opener of the best-of-two series, 3-2, but Seckman came back in the game two with a 5-1 victory. That forced a mini-game, which was won by Lutheran South. The Lancers will face Whitfield for the Wickenheiser Cup title Mar. 7 at the Scottrade Center at 5:30 p.m. Oakville's hockey team fell just short of joining Lutheran South at the Scottrade Center. Lutheran South and Seckman win first round series in the Mid-States Hockey Association playoffs.
The road to the Scottrade Center has begun for area hockey teams as the Mid-States Hockey Association playoffs began this weekend. All teams in the league qualify for the playoffs which are three-tiered. The top flight of teams compete for the St. Louis Blues High School Challenge Cup. The championship game for those teams is scheduled for March 7 at 8 p.m. at the Scottrade Center. The next tier of teams play for the Wickenheiser Cup which has its championship game prior to the Challenge Cup at 5:30 p.m. The third tier play for the Founders Cup which will have its championship game Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Queeny Park. First round series are best-of-two. If teams split the two games, a mini-game will be played following the second game. …

In hockey, Oakville won the Southwest Division while Summit captured the South Division title.
Boys Basketball The 3-pointers were flying and falling for a pair of area boys basketball players Friday. Lutheran South's Parker Van Nest connected on five treys en route to 25 points in a big 61-55 win over Festus. Jim Hudson added 15 points and 14 rebounds in the win over the Tigers, who entered the game with a 13-3 record. Seckman's Colby Holloway made six 3-pointers although they came in a losing cause against Sullivan 60-46. Affton continued to light up the scoreboard in a pair of wins last week. The Cougars had four players score in double figures in wins over McCluer South-Berkeley (75-52) and Seckman (71-51). Affton has scored in excess of 70 points in three straight games.
