Mesnier Primary Students Say Goodbye With Pie

As a prize for completing more than 300,000 minutes of reading, students threw pies at Principal Steve Brotherton.

With Principal Steve Brotherton moving on to his new position as Affton School District superintendent, Mesnier Primary School knew they wanted to say goodbye in a special way. "Dr. Bortherton wouldn't kiss a pig or shave his head or wear a costume or go on the roof. Eventually we landed on this," said Mesnier librarian Laverene Sebben, who oversaw the pie-in-the-face planning. Sebben said that it's difficult to get students excited about reading in the last month of school, and they wanted to offer a great incentive for the students. It was decided that the class who read for the most minutes between April 31 and May 31 would get to throw pies at Brotherton. Pam Hogan's second-grade class read for more than 17,000 minutes that month, and …

Mesnier Students Go the Extra Mile(s)

Thirty elementary students ran 26 miles, read 26 books and did 26 good deeds over a period of several months to complete the Read, Right and Run program.

Twenty-six miles is a lot to run for anyone, but it can be an especially intimidating number for elementary school kids. Add in reading 26 books and doing 26 good deeds, and the Read, Right, Run program organized by Go! St. Louis is quite the challenge. Yet that's just what 30 students from Mesnier Elementary School did this year. Unlike adult marathoners, the Kindergarten-Second Grade students did not have to run the distance all at once, but instead had several months to complete the three goals. Mesnier Librarian Laverne Sebben and Physical Education Teacher Jeff Wulfert worked together to help the kids reach the program's goals. They said the program is a valuable educational tool. "Part of the idea was to encourage kids to be …

According to ASMC President Sarah Hertel, ASMC raises funds and provides support for everything from playground equipment to pencil sharpeners.  Comprised of nearly 40 women, ASMC holds annual fundraisers, class parties, arts and crafts fairs as well as smaller fundraisers to benefit Affton schools. Mesnier Principal Dr. Steve Brotherton was chosen to lead district after extensive search.

After a six-month search, Dr. Steve Brotherton, principal at Affton's Mesnier Primary School, has been named the next superintendent of the Affton School District.  "I think this is the culmination of my life's work. I'm totally excited." Brotherton said after the announcement during Tuesday's board of education meeting at Rogers Middle School.  Brotherton will take the post July 1. Interim Superintendent Dr. Ken Weissflug will continue to helm the district for the rest of the year and is expected to stay on in his previous position as assistant superintendent.
