Also Lindbergh tops Mehlville in early season baseball.
Post Basketball The Suburban East Conference announced its all-conference team this week and Affton had five players recognized, including standout senior Sean Benedict. Benedict made the first team as he averaged 15.8 points and 12.2 rebounds a game while shooting 55.9 percent from the field. The future looks bright for the Cougars as the other four players named were all underclassmen. Junior Halid Abera was named to the second team while junior John Brannan and sophomores Kohl Siebert and Reid Siebert were honorable mention picks. Baseball The spring season has not begun for all area teams, especially those that had spring break last week, but there were some memorable first week performances for several area athletes. Mehlville scored …

Sophomore Leigh Wayman’s bases-loaded hit wins it in the bottom of the seventh. Lutheran South will advance to the district championship game.
When the girls softball season began in August, the plan at Lutheran South was to have separate varsity and junior varsity teams this season. Coach Linda McQueen wanted to have a varsity unit made up of mostly juniors and seniors, and a JV team consisting mostly of freshmen and sophomores. One player McQueen expected to play on JV was sophomore infielder Leigh Wayman, a talented player who figured to come off the bench this year, because there were older girls at her position. But in the biggest game of the year and biggest moment of the year, it was Wayman who was in the lineup, and she found herself at the plate with the bases loaded and the game tied in the bottom of the seventh inning. And the 5-foot-6-inch dynamo delivered, smacking a…

The Cougars open their season on Friday, Aug. 26 at home against Union.
With fall practice starting Monday and the first day of school slated for Aug. 17, the Affton High School Athletics Department began the official start of its 2011-2012 sporting year by releasing its 2011 varsity, junior varsity, and freshmen football schedules. The Cougars, who will play a combined 24 games in 2011, are all set for their first official training camp workouts at 7:30 a.m. on Monday. The varsity team, under coach Dan Oliver, will be the first to take the field this season, beginning with a difficult home game against Union (MO) High on at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26. The Wildcats were 11-2 last year and advanced to the Class 4 state quarterfinals before they lost to eventual state champion Webb City. Union is bringing back its …

Affton girls track wins the championship at the Suburban East Conference Meet for the second straight year.
The Affton girls track team defended its championship in the Suburban East Conference Meet on Thursday at McCluer South-Berkeley. And that is quite an accomplishment for the Cougars. "The conference is just so good," Affton coach Tim Hill said. "Last year, the state champs from both Class 3 (McCluer South) and Class 4 (Ladue) came from this conference." Those teams were not at full strength on Thursday, sitting out some key runners, but it was a good day at the track for the Cougars. "This was nice, but the real focus is on districts," Hill said. "That is the one we really want to win." Affton will have the home-field advantage as it hosts the Class 3 District 2 Meet on May 14. Juniors Taylor Porter and Cheyenne Hoerr are looking forward …

For the first time in nearly three years, Affton has enough players to field a freshmen baseball team.
For the first time in nearly three years, Affton is fielding a freshmen baseball team. Unlike some school districts across the country that are cutting back on freshmen and junior varsity teams due to budget issues, in past years, the Cougars simply didn’t have enough freshmen interested in playing baseball to field a freshmen team. That has changed for the 2011 season. The Cougars not only have a full roster at the freshmen level, they have also moved some of those freshmen players up to the varsity team. “It’s been about three years since we’ve had the numbers come out to play, so that’s been a plus this season,” Affton head coach Adonis Smith said. “We’ve actually got a couple of freshmen here on the varsity team with Zach Fiebig, Joey …

Cougars guard Hali Ford is second overall in the St. Louis area at 5.5 blocks per game and is averaging 4.2 steals per game.
Excelling at basketball is certainly nothing new for Affton junior Hali Ford. “When I was in fifth grade, I had been pulled up to play on an eighth-grade Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team because the coaches felt my basketball skills exceeded the fifth-grade level,” said Ford. This is just one of the many memories Ford has from her ongoing and very successful career in basketball. Ford has loved the game since she picked up a basketball in the third grade. “I watched my older brother as I grew up, and I saw how much my dad loved helping him, so I asked him to help me one day,” Ford said. The intensity and aggressiveness of the game is what has driven Ford to be one of the top players in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Currently, Ford is …
