McNeil, Beck Elected President and VP of Affton School Board

Recently elected board members were sworn in, and a new committee was formed at a special school board meeting Tuesday night.

At a special meeting Tuesday night, the Affton Board of Education welcomed a new member, elected a new president and formed a new committee. District secretary Carol Loehr swore in newly elected member Susan Casaleggi and re-elected board treasurer Tom Bellavia. Mike Alexander was also relected on April 5, but he was absent at the meeting. Alexander can be sworn in at any time at the district administration building. Casaleggi replaced outgoing board president Ron Becher, who chose not to run for re-election. The board thanked Becher for his years of service and evenhanded guidance. "It's been a great two years, and it's no accident that you were president," board member Larry Knox said. Becher, however, said the credit should be shared. "…

Affton School Board Approves Creation of Early Childhood Education Center

As a part of the district’s five-year plan, the district is moving to acquire land and a building on Reavis Road with a fall 2012 opening in mind.

At a special meeting on Thursday, the Affton Board of Education decided to move forward on plans to create the district’s own early childhood education (ECE) center. According to Interim Superintendent Ken Weissflug, the board unanimously approved an agreement for the acquisition of land and a building for the new center at 9832 Reavis Road. The district expects the transaction to be closed in June. The district anticipates opening the center in the fall of 2012. The district has not yet released details on how many children the new facility will serve. The move was first announced this morning in an email to district staff, which Weissflug forwarded on to Patch. The district will fund the buying and renovating of the new facility by …

Affton School Board Approves Post-Snow Changes to End of School

The last day of school will be June 3. Students and teachers will keep their spring holiday on April 22.

The Affton Board of Education voted unanimously on Tuesday to make the district’s last day of school June 3, instead of June 6. After six snow days, district policy pushes the end of school back into June and cuts April 25 from the school’s Easter break. Interim Superintendent Ken Weissflug proposed, however, that the district not bring students and teachers back for an ineffectual last day on June 6, a Monday. This allows Affton’s summer programs to begin on time in the second week of June. Camp Cougar will start June 6. Secondary summer school starts June 7. Elementary summer school will begin on June 13, so teachers have time to prepare their rooms. Before Weissflug made his proposal to the board, the administration did a poll of …
