The Affton Fire Protection District said there was some smoke behind an ice cooler.
Affton Fire Protection District responded Monday morning to a small fire at Cafe Affton. The fire trucks arrived on scene around 9:45 a.m. Fire Chief Jim Fritz said there was some smoke behind an ice cooler in the restaurant's kitchen. There was not a fire, said assistant chief Ben Waser. The fire protection district is leaving two pumper trucks on the scene, and engineers are examining the wiring behing the restaurant's coolers.

Robert Hehmeyer won a resounding victory Tuesday night over his opponents in the Affton Fire Protection District race. With 29 of 29 precincts counted, the unofficial vote tallies have Hehmeyer receiving 67.2 percent of the vote. All volunteers are qualified to respond to both fire and ambulance calls.
Twenty-eight people currently serve on the Affton Fire District Reserve Program, the only program of its kind in South County, Suburban Journals reports. All volunteers are qualified to respond to fire and ambulance calls, and spend at least 36 hours each month at the district's Station House No. 3, according to the report. Chief Jim Fritz says better equipment is just one perk of joining other St. Louis fire departments on the same dispatching service.
Several St. Louis area fire districts are moving to a new dispatch service this year--and that's fine by the Affton fire chief. Affton, Fenton, Lemay and Mehlville fire districts, which currently use the South County Fire Alarm Association, will move to Central County Emergency 911, effective July 1. The network is expected to provide better communication between fire departments. Affton Fire Chief Jim Fritz recently told KMOV the switch will not only provide the department with updated equipment, but "better ways to do things than we are now."
