New Principals for Gotsch, Mesnier Schools

The Affton School District Board of Education approved the hire of Dr. Christine Power and Tina Been last week.

The Affton School District has announced the hire of two new principals for the 2013-2014 school year, though their faces aren't new to students. Dr. Christine Powers will move from her position as principal of Mesnier Primary School over to Gotsch Intermediate School; Mesnier Assistant Principal Tina Been will move up to principal. Superintendent Dr. Steve Brotherton said "both Christine and Tina have a strong record of success in our schools and with our students" in a statement on the district website. Their new positions go into effect on July 1, according to the district website. The hires were approved by the district's Board of Education on May 7. Affton School District Announces SOAR Award Winners

Eighteen staff and volunteers were honored at the April 10 event.

Eighteen staff and volunteers were honored at the Affton School District’s Service and Outstanding Achievement Recognition (SOAR) Awards on April 10, the school district announced in a news release. “I am impressed by the dedication and contributions of each of the nominees,” Doug Beck, president of the Affton School District Board of Education, said in the release. “They strive to make a difference, and each of them make the Affton schools and community a better place.” Six nominees received the prestigious SOAR Award: Dave Walters, manager of Buildings and Grounds for Affton School District, received the 2013 Superintendent’s Award for his work on the planning, development and opening of the Affton Early Childhood Center, according to …

Meet Affton's Teachers of the Year

Mesnier second grade teacher Kristina Pluff was recognized for the achievement at an awards ceremony on April 10.

Kristina Pluff, second-grade teacher at Mesnier Primary School, has been named the Affton School District’s 2013-2014 Teacher of the Year, the school district announced in a news release. Pluff was awarded the honor at a ceremony on April 10. She will have the opportunity to compete for the title of Missouri State Teacher of the Year, according to the release. Pluff has been teaching at Affton for 13 years, holds a Master of Arts in Education and is certified in Gifted Education. AHS Junior Receives Foreign Language Award

Jessica Castellanos is currently studying French.

Affton High School junior Jessica Castellanos was honored with the Distinguished Achievement Award for Excellence in Languages by the University of Missouri-St. Louis College of Arts and Sciences on March 21, the Affton School District announced in a news release. Castellanos is an Honors French III student. “Jessica is a terrific French student. Her work is superior and very advanced for her high school level,” foreign language teacher Paula Gyllenborg said in the release. “I love the way her minds works. Mesnier Students Advance to St. Louis Science Fair

Fifteen kindergarten, first and second-graders took first place at the school's science fair.

Affton School District Looks to Upgrade Buildings

School officials are in the process of evaluating each school building.

Over the next month, the Affton School District will be reviewing all of its schools to see which buildings require upgrades, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.  School officials are working with Dickinson Hussman Architects to evaluate each school building, the newspaper reports. A public hearing has been scheduled for 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 4 at the Affton Early Childhood Center to discuss the evaluation. Affton Schools Names New Technology, Information Director

Dr. Robert Dillon joins the Affton School District on April 22.

A former Maplewood Richmond Heights principal has been named the Affton School District's Director of Technology and Information, the school district announced Wednesday. Dr. Robert Dillon's hiring was approved at the Board of Education's April 2 meeting, according to a news release from the school district. Affton Schools Honor Teachers of the Year

Affton Chamber of Commerce hosted the annual Exceptional Educators banquet on March 14.

Affton-area teachers were honored at the Affton Chamber of Commerce’s annual Exceptional Educators banquet on Thurs, March 14, according to a news release from the Affton School District. Affton School District’s 2012-2013 Teachers of the Year include Lynn Hennessy, first-grade teacher at Mesnier Primary; Nicki Hejlek, third-grade teacher at Gotsch Intermediate; Beth Daniels, sixth-grade math teacher at Rogers Middle; and Cathy Cartier, English teacher at Affton High School, who is also serving as the Missouri State Teacher of the Year.

Snow Day for Affton, Bayless Students Monday

The inclement weather has prompted several businesses around Affton and Shrewsbury to close early on Sunday. We'll update Monday closings as more information becomes available.

Sunday's spring snowstorm is prompting cancellations around Affton and Shrewsbury. The Affton School District and Bayless School District have cancelled classes for Monday due to inclement weather.  Lindbergh students are on spring break this week. The Shrewsbury City Center will be closed until 10 a.m. on Monday, according to their Facebook page.  The Affton License Office at 9503 Gravois Road will open at noon today due to the inclement weather. South County License Office, 27 Ronnie's Plaza, will open at noon.
