Fifth Grader Wins Gotsch School Spelling Bee

Kaitlyn Pluff, a fifth-grader whose teacher is Eric Bowen, won the competition with the word “authoritative.” Fourth-graders Kimberly Welch placed second, and Anna Bohnert placed third.

Thirty-five students at Gotsch Intermediate School in Affton competed in the school’s Spelling Bee on Fri., Jan. 11. Kaitlyn Pluff, a fifth-grader whose teacher is Eric Bowen, won the competition with the word “authoritative.” Fourth-graders Kimberly Welch placed second, and Anna Bohnert placed third. Pluff will move on to compete in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch 2013 Spelling Bee Semi-Final Competition, to be held at McKendree University on March 2. Third Grader Wins Spelling Bee with 'S-l-a-n-d-e-r'

See which Gotsch Intermeidate School third graders competed in the spelling bee.

Twenty-four students at Gotsch Intermediate School in Affton competed in the Third-Grade Spelling Bee on Dec. 7. Helen Shannon, whose teacher is Patrick Lowery, won the competition with the word “slander.” Ela Potera placed second, and Claire Burmester placed third. Shannon, Potera and Burmester will all compete against fourth and fifth-grade students at the Gotsch Intermediate Spelling Bee, to be held in January 2013. The winner of the school spelling bee will move on to compete in the St. Louis Spelling Bee, held in March 2013. Three students from each third-grade class at Gotsch Intermediate were selected to participate. Custodian Saves Poll Worker after Heart Attack on Election Day

Emira Adilovic saved the life of a poll worker who collapsed in a heart attack as the polls closed on Election Day. The man died Friday after spending time with his family in the hospital.

A custodian at Gotsch Intermediate School used CPR and a defibrillator to stabilize a poll worker who had a heart attack just after the polls closed on Election Day. Emira Adilovic’s quick action kept the poll worker alive during the approximately 20 minutes needed for the fire department to arrive and transport the worker to the hospital. The poll worker, whom the custodians know only as George, died Friday after four days in the hospital. Tears well in Adilovic’s eyes when she thinks of the death of a man she tried so hard to save. “I am sad,” said Adilovic, who was born in Bosnia, “but I am happy because he had time with his family.” Jumping into action Tim Showers, another custodian at Gotsch, had just closed the building at the end of…

PHOTOS: Cardinals' World Series Trophy Visits Gotsch School

St. Louis County Police Officer Kathy Kelly, DARE Officer of the Year, brought the World Series Trophy to Gotsch Intermediate School students.

It's not often an inanimate object tours Affton schools as a special guest, but for Gotsch Intermediate School students, the 2011 World Series trophy was a special sight. DARE officer of the year and St. Louis County Police Officer Kathy Kelly brought the trophy to Gotsch. Click through the photos above to see more. LAST CHANCE: Free Kung Fu for Gotsch 5th Graders

Sign up by tomorrow for free Kung Fu lessons for 5th grade students at Affton's Gotsch Intermediate School.

Sign up ends tomorrow for a free 10-week Kung Fu program for Gotsch Intermediate School fifth grade boys and girls. The Affton Community Volunteer Organization is offering the program from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday evenings at the school's gym. (Enter through door #18.) The first session is September 21. Sifu Jason Cook, instructor, will lead the classes. To sign up, send the student's name, the guardian's name and a phone number to acvo@affton.k12.mo.us or call 314-633-5994x10501.

My son took the Kung Fu class at Gotsch last spring and loved it so much he's continued lessons with Mr. Cook since. He definitely has a great teacher and great with the kids.   more ›
