Shrewsbury Mayor on South County Connector: Doesn't Want a Big Slab of Cement

The South County Connector would take traffic off Shrewsbury Avenue, but Mayor Buckley said it needs to be done right.

About 70 area residents gathered Wednesday at the Shrewsbury City Center to learn about the South County Connector, a proposed 4-lane road through Shrewsbury and Webster Groves as it connects Hanley Road in Maplewood and the River Des Peres Parkway. Trailnet, the group known for promoting bicyling and hiking in St. Louis, hosted the meeting. The group's Marielle Brown said the 4-lane road would be from 1.5 to 2 miles long. At intersections it would be up to seven lanes wide. It would be elevated through several points, with a full interchange at Interstate 44. A 75-day public comment period on the project’s draft Environmental Impact Study (EIS) began in early May. The design phase would begin if the county approves the EIS. Shrewsbury …

The impetus for the S. County connector is ultimately due to the flow of people from Jefferson County to Clayton. Yes, it would be used by StL County residents as well, but if you look at the traffic projections driving the connector, it's coming from the growth in the southern exurbs. I feel very strongly that StL County residents shouldn't bear the burden through the loss of neighborhoods, …   more ›

South County Connector Study Draft Due This Month

Click this story to see an interactive map with the corridor's new locations.

St. Louis County officials expect to get a final decision on the South County Connector project sometime this summer. A draft of the environmental impact statement is due in January 2013, according to the St. Louis County South County Connector website. Residents will have 45 days to review the study before county officials hold a final public hearing in February or early March. Once residents have commented on the environmental impact statement by early spring, the Federal Highway Admnistration will make a final decision, probably by summer 2013. The project does not yet have funding to support it, but the environmental impact statement and a final decision from the Federal Highway Administration will make it eligible for federal funding…

Shrewsbury Takes Stand Against South County Connector

Aldermen passed a resolution opposing any development that would involve taking residential properties.

Correction: A previous version of this article incorrectly attributed information and a pair of quotes to Barb Dressler. The information and quotes should've been attributed to Karen Diehl. Shrewsbury has joined nearby Webster Groves in issuing a resolution opposing any South County Connector proposals that would require St. Louis County to take residential property in the city. The St. Louis County Department of Highways of Traffic’s proposals for a north-south linking route were presented at a series of public meetings this summer where the plans sparked opposition from residents concerned about the use of eminent domain. The resolution received unanimously approval from the Shrewsbury Board of Aldermen at their regular meeting Tuesday …

Shrewsbury Mayor Voices Opposition to Connector Routes

Mayor Felicity Buckley asked aldermen consider a resolution opposing eminent domain in the city.

Shrewsbury could join another nearby municipality in opposing any routes for the proposed South County Connector that would involve taking homes or other residential properties. Five possible corridors for a north-south linking route have been proposed by the St. Louis County Department of Highways and Traffic. Construction of the connector could involve the use of eminent domain to clear the necessary land in Shrewsbury, Webster Groves, Maplewood and unincorporated parts of the county. At a Board of Aldermen work session Tuesday, Mayor Felicity Buckley said she submitted a letter on behalf of the city that reflected what she had heard from Shrewsbury residents. With one possible exception, Buckley said “the bottom line was that none of …

But putting a Walmart in Shrewsbury is OK? Putting a distribution center at the end of a 12,000 mile conveyor belt from China, with goods coming in and American dollars going back is great but trying to solve a major traffic problem is" saving Shrewbury". That is incredibly comical.   more ›

South County Connector Unveils Potential Worries for Shrewsbury

Mayor Felicity Buckley says four of the five proposed routes are unacceptable.

A quicker drive from South County to mid-St. Louis County may be a decade away, but many Shrewsbury area residents aren't seeing the need to disrupt their community. A public presentation of the South County Connector Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) drew scores of residents to the Shrewsbury City Center Thursday. The EIS was the subject of a similar presentation Tuesday at the Affton White-Rodgers Community Center. St. Louis County Department of Highways and Traffic officials said the EIS, sponsored by the department in cooperation with the Missouri Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration is intended to find a way to alleviate traffic congestion in some midcounty areas and create a more direct route from …

I live in Affton and have no problem getting to Clayton or anywhere else for that matter. If there is money burning a whole in someones pocket, then put it where it is really needed, this isn't needed. If traffic is an issue for you, get up earlier or leave earlier to get where your going, simple! Don't inconvenience all for the inconvenience of a few. This is just unnecessary expensive busy work…   more ›

South County Connector Meetings Will Unveil New Road Plans

Shrewsbury Mayor is concerned about effects on Shrewsbury community life.

The St. Louis County Department of Highways and Traffic has scheduled two more open house meetings on the proposed South County Connector road project for this week. The project includes an environmental impact and location study for potential new roads to reduce traffic congestion on roads like River Des Peres Boulevard, Laclede Station Road, Hanley Road and Big Bend Boulevard, and to improve access to Interstates 44, 64, 55 and 170. The study area includes much of Shrewsbury, as well as parts of Maplewood, Webster Groves and South St. Louis city. The first meeting is 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Affton White-Rodgers Community Center, 9801 Mackenzie Rd. in Affton. The second is 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Shrewsbury City Center, 5200 Shrewsbury Ave. …

County Studying the Impact of New Roads Through Shrewsbury

The South County Connector project will identify traffic alternatives.

The St. Louis County Department of Highways and Traffic asked residents on Thursday for feedback about the planned South County Connector project at an open house at the Affton White-Rodgers Community Center. Reactions ranged from excitement at better access to area highways to concern about the effect of new roads on their homes. "I love the idea," said Mary Kaufmann, who lives near Reavis Road and Interstate 55 in St. George. "It's a great opportunity for South County and the city." Kaufmann, who is also the mayor of St. George, said she is looking forward to better access to I-170. Project managers are producing an environmental impact statement and location study to evaluate where to build a road that will improve connectivity in …
