On the article South County Walmart Plan Voted Down by Planning Commission
Larry Stone

ReplyKudos to the St. Louis County Planning and Zoning Commission for hearing the concerns of area residents and denying the rezoning request for this project. Additional kudos to Maryann Gregory and her many petition signers on this initial victory. Hopefully the County Council will concur with the Planning Commission that
it should remain zoned for low usage and not a 24-hour grocery store. Citizen involvement and open-minded County Officials have had a meeting of the minds.
Very good news! -
On the article Petition Drive Opposes Walmart Grocery Store in South County
Larry Stone

ReplyAh here we go again! Chris P has responded. The self proclaimed protector of any/all business weighs in to defend any business that desires to plant itself around South County. Note that Chris P begins by stating "I'm not sure the people quoted "get" that with the references to the "retail behemoth" that causes traffic and destroys their suburban way of life, etc." So right off the bat Chris P is telling you you are uninformed (i.e. stupid). Also seems to have something against your selected suburban way of life and tells you you're a job killer. Since Chris P obviously doesn't live in the area to be impacted by this, he/she declares himself/herself to be the know all end all of how this should play out. Chris P....the petitioners have made it clear that they have nothing against Wal-Mart. They are concerned about retail's impact on " THEIR" neighborhood To Maryann Gregory:
I say stay your rightful course and do not be deterred by the many missives that I guarantee you will follow from Chris P. He/she has already insulted your intelligence
and your personally chosen suburban lifestyle....need I say more? Yes. "I wish you great success with your petition drive!" -
On the article Affton Blockbuster Closing, Liquidating Everything

ReplyTo Chris P who prefers anonymity....while the rest of us are actually working diligently for the long term betterment of Affton, we could well do without your consistent pot shots and negative rhetoric. It serves no purpose. It's quite obvious you have disdain for Affton's approach to positive economic development. We get it! Blockbuster was a desirable business and well patronized until a paradigm shift occurred in how people across the country started opting to receive their movies. Eventually there will not be any more Blockbusters. Sad fact..but reality. And now we will strive to work with property owner Ray White to attract another community friendly business to occupy that location. Rather than taking another pot shot at us, why not use this excellent mode of communication to send along your well thought out ideas for what you think should occupy this soon to be vacant storefront.

ReplyChris P I truly hope you get your wish...I think "LOWER" KENRICK is just where V V needs to stay. It belongs in Shrewsbury just down from the recently tiffed Wal-Mart.where they'll be peddling Chinese-made low end goods made in sweat shops.
And to PaulRevere....you lost any credibility in the first line of your e-mail with your inappropriate salutation for addressing an elected public official. No...wait...that credibility was lost with the use of a pseudonym in lieu of your name...kind of like Chris P seems to have totally lost his last name. I still may not agree with what you
have each posted, but I, and more than a few others, could perhaps take you more seriously if you demonstrated your convictions by signing comments with you legal names. Just saying! -
On the article Is Affton Too Good For Value Village? vs. Free Market: Where Do You Stand?

ReplyOlder inner suburbs like Affton and Crestwood MUST be diligent in assuring that there is a proper balance of types of businesses. There is negative economic development and there is positive economic development. How many thrift stores, resale shops, dollar stores, payday loan stores are present in a community can AND DOES affect the image of a community and a negative image can kill a community! There must be a proper balance of businesses and that is why we have zoning laws. Those who knock Affton and Crestwood for wanting to have a vibrant quality business community seem to lack an understanding of the absolute necessity of a positive, thoughtful approach to economic development. Affton is blessed to have two outstanding County Councilman, a very active Chamber of Commerce with an Econonomic Development Committee and the faith-based Affton Community Involvement Association all working in tandem to assure our community's well-being. Neither Affton or Crestwood want to be referred to as Resale Capitals of St. Louis. But they will become just that if our business community and our residents become apathetic and uninvolved. Kudos to Councilman Stenger for understanding what positive community development is, and is therefore willing to work diligently to assure it happens in Affton.

On the announcement Affton firefighters questioning business owners

ReplyTo: Concerned - Thank you for your candid response to my statement on 3/29/13. I have been following the mess in the Monarch Fire Protection District that you referenced. I recall the similar mess in the Mehlville FPD, and I recall the in-depth Investigative reporting done by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch early in the last decade that took FPD boards across St.Louis County, including Affton, to task for a variety of reprehensible conduct. The taxpayers of Affton have, in the last couple of years, provided for new fire houses, new ambulances and other equipment. recommended
by the Affton FPD Board. All of this during the worst recessionary period since the great depression. Why did we do that? Because we love our community and care about the safety of persons and property. But going forward I, like you, all of the others who have commented herein, and every taxpayer in Affton MUST exercise EXTREME DUE DILIGENCE before casting our ballots on April 2. The candidate elected to serve on the Affton FPD , MUST NOT IN ANY WAY be beholding to Affton FPD employees! It is when taxpayers unfortunately become lax and get apathetic that the door opens both to pre and post-election shenanigans! -

ReplyWhile "Concerned" throws out allegations about candidates for public office and espouses to know a plethora of alleged facts about a candidate for the Affton Fire Protection District, he or she seemingly doesn't have the intestinal fortitude to identify him or herself. When I correspond on Patch as a citizen of Affton I use my name and don't hide behind a pseudonym. When I correspond on Patch in my capacity as the Chair of the Affton Community Involvement Association,
I identify myself as representing that group. While Concerned's concerns are disturbing, they would have much more credibility if proffered by a name rather than a pseudonym. For all we,know, Concerned is just one of the other candidates shooting at another candidate. Concerned...if you're really interested in raising what may or may not be valid and potentially serious concerns about the Fire Protection District, why do so in such a clandestine manner? -

ReplyA review of crime stats from the Shrewsbury P.D. contained in Patch over the past year is disturbing at best. It's like Watson Road has become a veritable conduit for
drug and alcohol abusers. Kudos to the Shrewbury P.D. for staying on top of this definite and unfortunate "trend".

This is a clear cut case of citizen involvement at its best! You were tenacious in letting your opinion be known loud and clear. You made an appropriate case as to why this was not a good use for that plot of land. Those of us who are members and affiliate members of the faith-based Affton Community Involvement Association salute you.
